Analyse how Shakespeare represents the destructive power of jealousy in Othello.

In Othello, Shakespeare represents jealousy as a force that does not simply grow inside a person but is planted there by someone else. Iago calls it "the green-eyed monster which doth mock / The meat it feeds on", and the play shows that monster slowly consuming a man who was once defined by his calm. Shakespeare first establishes Othello's composure so that his fall is felt more sharply. When Brabantio's men draw their swords, Othello commands them to "Keep up your bright swords, for the dew will rust them". His measured verse and gentle irony show a leader in control of himself. By Act 4, that verse breaks apart into fragments such as "Handkerchief! Confessions! Handkerchief!", and the collapse of his language mirrors the collapse of his judgement. Iago's method shows that jealousy feeds on suggestion rather than proof. He never states that Desdemona is unfaithful; he repeats Othello's own words back to him and lets doubt do the work. The handkerchief becomes the "ocular proof" Othello demands, yet it proves nothing at all. Shakespeare suggests that once jealousy takes hold, any object can be made to carry the meaning the jealous mind already believes.

Orwell positions Winston's private diary as the first act of resistance, yet the novel never lets that freedom stand alone. Each entry is written in the knowledge that it will be found, so the act of writing becomes both defiance and surrender.

The Party's control is most visible in language. Newspeak narrows what can be thought by narrowing what can be said, and Syme's enthusiasm for the destruction of words shows that collective control is sustained by willing participants rather than force alone.

By the final chapter the tension is resolved in the Party's favour. The closing line, that Winston loved Big Brother, reframes every earlier moment of rebellion as a stage in his re-education.

Response

The novel suggests that freedom begins in memory. Winston's attempts to recall the past before the Revolution are fragmentary, and the Party's rewriting of records means that individual memory has nothing to hold on to.

Julia offers a different model of resistance, one grounded in pleasure rather than ideas. Her rebellion is real but limited, and Orwell uses the contrast to show that private freedoms can coexist with total public control.

Room 101 removes the last private space. When Winston betrays Julia, the Party has proven that even loyalty to another person can be turned into an instrument of the collective.
