What the IB requires

  • The IB does not ban AI software. Students may use it where the task allows.
  • Content produced by AI is not the student's own work, and must be credited in the body of the work and in the bibliography.
  • Uncredited use of AI is academic misconduct.
  • Teachers confirm authenticity mainly by knowing the student's work and asking them to explain it, rather than through detection software.

What the policy covers

  • Rationale, purpose, scope and definitions
  • Student use of AI, with an AI level for every task
  • Staff use of AI
  • Assessment and academic integrity, including how suspected misuse is handled
  • Privacy, data security and a register of approved tools
  • Wellbeing and safety, including deepfakes
  • Roles and responsibilities, breaches, related policies and review
  • Appendices: the AI Use Scale, a student declaration of AI use, and the tools register
